Schools-computers-Aug24
  • Only one-third of SA schools have a computer centre
  • Eastern Cape: 1 in 10 schools has a computer centre
  • Gauteng: 8 in 10 schools have a computer centre

Only one-third of South African public schools have a computer centre, according to the Education Facility Management System published by the Department of Basic Education in July 2024.

The report contains an assessment of the infrastructure in government schools. Computer centres play a pivotal role in preparing students for the workforce, but their distribution across the country is uneven.

In the Eastern Cape, only one in 10 schools has a computer centre, whereas in Gauteng, eight out of 10 schools have one.

In June 2024, the Department of Basic Education re-gazetted new regulations which stipulate that schools should have technology centres or laboratories if they offer technology or science as subjects.

All schools are required to have access to a school library or a media centre as well as to a suitable library collection. In 2024, 26% of schools had libraries and 18% had laboratories.
