  • SA are dominant force in Joburg, outscoring opponents 1,058 to 708
  • But the All Blacks upend this, winning five of nine tests at Ellis Park
  • NZ has outscored and outplayed SA in Cape Town, winning four of five

At an altitude of nearly 1,800m above sea level, Ellis Park rugby stadium in Johannesburg – officially Emirates Airline Park – has proved a formidable fortress for the Springboks.

When all international matches played at the Highveld stadium are considered, the Springboks tend to come out on the winning side, outscoring their opponents 1,058 to 708 points.

New Zealand’s All Blacks. however, have beaten the South Africans five out of the nine times they have played at Ellis Park. The scores are remarkably balanced with South Africa’s 271 points just four points shy of New Zealand, indicating intense, closely fought encounters.

At the coast, the All Blacks’ dominance is clear: New Zealand has won four out of the five test encounters played in Cape Town. New Zealand is the only nation to outscore the Springboks at Newlands rugby stadium, 101 to 67.
