MyCiti-bus-OWIC

It has taken MiCiti, Cape Town’s rapid bus service, some time to return to normal after the Covid-19 pandemic, but the number of passenger trips last year was only about 600,000 shy of the record 9.9-million trips made in 2017.

The number of passenger trips rose to 19.3-million last year, which represents a 77% increase from 2021’s pandemic trough of 10.9-million.

The MyCiti bus service currently operates along 44 routes across Cape Town, with the N2 Express service between Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha and the CBD among the busiest routes.

The development of a new metro-south east route is underway, and will provide a direct route from the city centre to Wynberg and Claremont. The city says it is the largest public transport infrastructure project undertaken by any metro in SA.

The R7.4-billion price tag includes stations, depots and a free-standing elevated traffic circle, which will be 6.2m above the ground.
