South Africa plans to send 138 athletes to the 2024 Paris Olympics. The athletes, who will compete in 19 disciplines, include four sports climbers, three skateboarders, two BMX trick riders, an archer, and a badminton player.
Hockey (32) and rugby 7s (24) include both men and women’s teams. The disciplines with the most participants are track and field (34 athletes) and aquatics (eight swimmers and one diver).
The South African cohort is smaller than Tokyo 2020, where 179 athletes participated in 17 sports.
Since the end of apartheid, South African athletes have won 38 Olympic medals: 11 gold, 18 silver, and nine bronze, predominantly in swimming and athletics.
Paris is hosting the Olympics for the third time, with 10,500 athletes competing in 329 events over 16 days. Note: Chart and team numbers updated 24 July 2024
