Shoprite expands its footprint by 52 new stores
Shoprite, South Africa’s largest supermarket group, reported a net increase of 68 stores in the first quarter ending in September. This figure reflects the total new store openings after accounting for any closures.
Most of this growth – 53 net new stores – was in its core South African supermarkets segment. The group said it had a total of 3,031 stores at the end of June.
Sales at the group’s South African business, which includes Usave, Checkers, LiquorShop and UNIQ clothing, grew by 11.4% in the quarter. Its non-South African segment, trading in nine countries across Africa, reported sales growth of 3.2% in rand terms and 19.7% in constant currency.
